Alimentação de Oligosarcus longirostris Menezes & Gèry (Osteichthyes, acestrorhynchinae) do Reservatório de Salto Segredo, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Gealh,Ana Maria; Hahn,Norma Segatti.
In the feeding study of O. longirostris Menezes & Gèry, 1983, 211 stomachs from fish caught between March 1993 and February 1994 were analysed. Diet composition was analysed by the index of relative importance which deals with the numerical and gravimetric occurrence frequency. Results indicated that the species is piscivorous and its preferential food consisted oíAslyanax sp. 2. It was also found that Astyanax sp. 3 became an important food item, depending on the site of capture and its availability. Availability of prey seems to have a strong influence on the diet of O. longirostris. This same tendency has been observed during the different seasons of the year. Ontogenetic changes have also been found in the basic diet.

Hahn,Norma Segatti; Almeida,Vera Lúcia Lescano de; Luz,Karla Danielle Gaspar da.
Hoplosternum Uttorale (Hancock, 1828) is an abundant species in the lagoons of the upper Paraná river floodplain. This species was sampled in Patos and Guaraná lagoons in the flood period (November/92-May/93) and low water period (June-October/93). To analyse food contents in the diet were analysed stomach of 91 adults. Twenty seven food items were recorded, among them, Testaceae, Nematoda, microcrustaceans, quironomids and organic detritus were predominant. These items allows to characterize the species as bentivore. To study feeding activity were analized 565 adults stomach contents. Food intake was more intense during flooding. Considering diel variation, the species started to eat during dusk, increasing during night, stopping to eat during daytime.

Alterations on piscivorous diet following change in abundance of prey after impoundment in a Neotropical river Neotropical Ichthyology
Cantanhêde,Geuza; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Fugi,Rosemara; Gubiani,Éder André.
The goal of this study was to investigate the alterations of diet of a piscivorous fish (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) following changes in abundance of a forage fish (Moenkhausia dichroura) during the trophic upsurge stage in a reservoir. Fish samplings were taken monthly in the Manso Reservoir (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil) from March 2000 to February 2001 (period I) and from March 2003 to February 2004 (period II). The abundance of Moenkhausia dichroura in the reservoir was significantly different in both periods, representing 9.6% of the individuals in period I and 66.4% in period II. Stomach contents analyses showed that the number of prey species consumed by A. pantaneiro decreased from 41 prey in period I to 14 in period II. In the last period M....

Diet and dental development of three species of Roeboides (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Novakowski,Gisele Caroline; Fugi,Rosemara; Hahn,Norma Segatti.
Lepidophagy has been recorded in various species of Roeboides. In this study we analyzed ontogenetic variation in diet and dental development of three Roeboides species (R. paranensis, R. prognathus and R. microlepis). Roeboides paranensis consumed mainly insects, scales and microcrustaceans, and the smaller individuals (<3.4 cm - SL) consumed mostly insects. Scale were only consumed by individuals greater than 3.4 cm. Scales were the dominant item in the diet in all sizes of R. prognathus. The diet of R. microlepis was composed primarily of whole fishes, however, the smaller individuals (<5.4 cm) consumed only insects. During ontogeny, exterior migration of teeth in the mouth started at 3.7 cm in R. paranensis and 6.5 cm in R. microlepis. As body...

Diet of a catfish before and after damming of the salto caxias reservoir, iguaçu river BABT
Delariva,Rosilene Luciana; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
This study evaluated the diet of Pimelodus sp., before and after damming of Salto Caxias, (waterfall in the Iguaçu river), as well spatial and ontogenetic diet shift. Surveys were carried out from March 1997 to February 1998 (before damming) and from April 1999 to January 2000 (after damming) inside the reservoir and adjacent tributaries. Stomach contents analysis of 682 specimens revealed omnivory with high degree of trophic opportunism to this species. Analysis of variance (three way ANOVA) for scores produced from Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) yielded a significant interaction between the damming phases and size of the individuals (juveniles and adults) (F = 4.68; P = 0.04). After damming, adults exploited mainly fish, whereas the juveniles...

Diet seasonality and food overlap of the fish assemblage in a pantanal pond Neotropical Ichthyology
Novakowski,Gisele Caroline; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Fugi,Rosemara.
We assessed the trophic structure of the fish fauna in Sinhá Mariana pond, Mato Grosso State, from March 2000 to February 2001. The aim was to determine the feeding patterns of the fish species during the rainy and dry seasons. The diets of 26 species (1,294 stomach contents) were determined by the volumetric method. Insects and fish were the most important food resources: insects were the dominant food of 23% and 27% of the species, respectively, in the rainy and dry season, and fish was the dominant item for 31% of the species in both seasons. Cluster analysis (Euclidean Distance) identified seven trophic guilds in the rainy season (detritivores, herbivores, insectivores, lepidophages, omnivores, piscivores and planktivores), and five trophic guilds in...

Balassa,Graziela Custodio; Fugi,Rosemara; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Galina,André Beal.
The diet of four species of Anostomidae (Leporinus friderici Bloch, 1794, L. striatus Kner, 1858, L. elongatus Valenciennes, 1849 and Leporinus sp.) were investigated in the Manso Reservoir, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Fish were sampled in three sites: upriver, in the main body of the reservoir, and below the dam. Were analized 276 stomachs. The diet was evaluated using the frequency of ocorrence and volumetric methods. Leporinus friderici showed tendency to herbivory, mainly in the upriver site. In the reservoir and below the dam, it consumed large quantities of fish; Isoptera only in the reservoir. Leporinus striatus and L. elongatus have similar diets, consuming Chironomidae larvae (Diptera), whereas Leporinus sp. was more generalist, feeding similar...

Feeding and trophic ecomorphology of Satanoperca pappaterra (Pisces, Cichlidae) in the Manso Reservoir, Mato Grosso State, Brazil BABT
Hahn,Norma Segatti; Cunha,Fabiane.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the relationship between diet and features of the trophic ecomorphology of Satanoperca pappaterra (Heckel, 1840) in an impacted environment. Samples were collected from March 2000 to February 2003 in Manso Reservoir, Cuiabá River, Mato Grosso State. Analysis of 93 stomachs contents showed that food resources associated with the substrate, such as plant remains, detritus, fish scales and Chironomidae larvae, dominated the diet. Consequently this species was characterized as a detritivorous-invertivorous. However, individuals collected in 2003 showed a greater selection of benthic organisms in relation to previous periods. Morphological structures such as position of the mouth, form of the lips, gill rakers and pharyngeal...

Feeding aspects of Leporinus amblyrhynchus (Characiformes: Anostomidae) in the first stages of formation of a Neotropical reservoir, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Mendonça,Fernando Pereira de; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Loureiro-Crippa,Valdirene Esgarbosa.
Diet and feeding activity of Leporinus amblyrhynchus before, during and after the damming of the rio Corumbá (Goiás State March 1996 to February 1998) were investigated. The diet, evaluated using the Feeding Index (IAi), showed that this species presents an invertivore feeding habit, preying on basically Chironomidae larvae. The feeding activity, estimated using the quantity of food in the stomach during a 24-hour cycle, showed that the feeding occurs mainly in the daytime. Considering the feeding aspects of this species during the formation of the reservatório of Corumbá there were small variations in the parameters (diet and feeding activity) dealt in this study.

Fish habitat associations along a longitudinal gradient in a preserved coastal Atlantic stream, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Wolff,Luciano Lazzarini; Hahn,Norma Segatti.
ABSTRACT Habitat conditions at multiple scales are one of the major factors structuring ichthyofauna. Thus, we analyzed the fish habitat associations along the headwater-mouth gradient of a coastal Atlantic stream. We categorized the sampling sites into habitat units, so that in the middle reach these categories were statistically differentiated into riffles, runs and pools. Samplings were carried out quarterly from May 2009 to February 2010 using electrofishing. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated an environmental gradient from higher water velocity and rocky bottom to deeper and sandy areas in the headwater-mouth direction. A total of 1,495 individuals belonging to 27 species were captured, being 13, 18 and 22 from headwater, middle and mouth...

Influence of feeding plasticity on the fitness of small Neotropical characids Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fiori,Leandro Fabrício; Alves,Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Benedito,Evanilde.
Abstract This study investigated the diet of four characids [Hyphessobrycon eques (Steindachner, 1882), Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882), Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) and Serrapinnus calliurus (Boulenger, 1900) ] coexisting in two lagoons and checked for possible spatial differences and the influence on population fitness. The main goal was check if these species show better fitness according to the nutritional value of the food resource consumed. In this way, it is expected that the species show improved nutritional conditions (evidenced by the relative condition factor) when foraging for items of animal origin, and the reverse is expected when consuming items of plant origin and detritus. Sampling was conducted in August 2011. The...

Longitudinal use of feeding resources and distribution of fish trophic guilds in a coastal Atlantic stream, southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Wolff,Luciano Lazzarini; Carniatto,Natália; Hahn,Norma Segatti.
This study described the use of food resources and the distribution of fish trophic guilds along the longitudinal gradient of a coastal Atlantic stream, southern Brazil. Allochthonous resources (terrestrial insects) predominated in the headwaters, whereas autochthonous food items (algae, fish) and detritus predominated in the mouth section. Detritivorous, aquaticinvertivorous, and terrestrial- and aquatic-insectivorous species occurred throughout the gradient, while omnivorous and piscivorous in the headwaters and middle stretches, respectively, and herbivorous in the middle and mouth. Detritivores and aquatic-insectivores were significantly more specialized than the other guilds, however, there was no evidence of a longitudinal increase in trophic...
